Fern Glass Boyd

Fern Glass Boyd is a founding member of the String Orchestra of the Rockies and has served as its principal cellist since its inception in 1985. She is Professor of Cello on the faculty at the University of Montana in Missoula where she teaches cello and courses in music literature, music appreciation, & string education.  Active as a recitalist and chamber musician, Fern performs regularly with the Montana Piano Trio (in residence at the University) and is involved in many outreach activities with young string players around the region. She has served as President of the Montana chapter of the American String Teachers Association for which she received a citation for outstanding leadership and is also an active member of the College Music Society.

Fern received her early music training at the Settlement Music School of Philadelphia, and went on to earn degrees at the Eastman School of Music and Yale University. She has performed in venues from New York's Carnegie Recital Hall to the rural outposts of Montana and on international stages in Vienna, Austria; Missoula's sister city of Neckargemund, Germany; and throughout Sweden. She enjoys reading and travel and exploring music in all styles and from many time periods. She performs on a fine English cello, made by Joseph Hill of London in 1811.
